Beyond Buja: A return to East Africa

depicting life in Burundi. 100% of the artist’s profits from the sale of prints will go to the Burundi Film Center, a non-profit organization that helps youth in Burundi learn to use mass-media communication technology as a tool to inspire, educate and entertain. arts&architecture's Festival X show featuring the work of Kim Weston

arts&architecture is pleased to feature the exhibit Legacy: The Work of Kim Weston as its contribution to the Festival X 2010 schedule. As a third-generation member of the hugely influential Weston family of photographers, Kim Weston has exhibited internationally – this exhibit will be his first in Canada. Admission is free.

Based in Carmel, California, Kim Weston is a well-known artist, photographer and teacher. Working primarily with large and medium-format black and white film, he pursues his own photographic language and technical excellence while paying tribute to the legacy of his grandfather, renowned 20^th century photographer, Edward Weston, and to his father Cole and his uncle Brett.

The exhibit will include 20 exquisite black and white photographs, many characteristic of his work with the nude. The 11 x 14 silver gelatine prints are mounted and matted to 16 x 20 and will be available for sale at the gallery for the duration of the exhibit. During this time we will also provide special pricing for the framing of purchased works.

Legacy: The Work of Kim Weston will be on display from September 15^th – October 3^rd. arts&architecture invites the public to view this unique collection of work and to attend any of the events planned to take place at the gallery throughout the exhibition period. The Young Haitian Documentary Photographers Project

arts&architecture is pleased to present “The Young Haitian Documentary Photographers Project”, a collection of photographs taken by Haitian youth. The exhibit is the inspiration of Almonte resident and founder of Focus on Development, Jeff Mills.

On a trip to Haiti in 2006, Mills brought cameras and introduced photography to some of the youth attending the local school in in the St. Marc region in Haiti. By sending them out to take pictures of their community, he hoped to gain a glimpse into their world and provide the youth with a new lens in which to view themselves. The exhibit has made its way from Almonte to the World Museum of Culture in Gothenberg, Sweden.

The prints will be for sale with proceeds going to Focus on Development, a Canadian NGO which supports the community development work in the rural communities of the Arbonite Valley, east of St. Marc, Haiti.

Join us for the vernissage this Friday, May 28th from 7 – 10 pm. Snacks and refreshments will be served. Jeff Mills will be speaking at the gallery on Sunday, May 30th at 2 pm, about his experiences in Haiti and will answer questions. The exhibit will be on display from May 26 – June 13. Free parking is available beside and behind the gallery.

At our "Portrait of the Artist" vernissage, we thought it would be fun to offer everyone the opportunity to take self portraits throughout the evening, so we set up a camera with remote, some props and a backdrop for a sort of "photo booth". Here are the photos from the photo booth along with some other event photos here.

Congratulation to the winning entries for the Naked In The Capital photography competition! 1st place went to Bridget Farr for "15.07" (shown above); second to Brittany Vienot for "Feral" and third to Ralph Nevins for "Transcendence". The winners were determined by votes cast by the photographers themselves.

The event raised over $1,600.00 for the Ottawa Snowsuit Fund. A big thank you to everyone who came out to show their support!

Although the silent auction closed at the end of opening night, prints are still available for purchase at a set price with 100% of the sales going to the Ottawa Snowsuit Fund.

Naked In The Capital

Coming up at arts&architecture: “Naked In The Capital”

Visit arts&architecture gallery to view the work of ten talented photographers who participated in the “Naked In The Capital” photography competition. The concept of the competition involves ten photographers competing to create outstanding images under challenging conditions, relying primarily on their own skill, photographic vision and the barest minimum of equipment. For more information about the competition itself, please see below.
The photographers were selected for their varying styles and exceptional skills in photography. Prints of all images will be exhibited anonymously and will be available for sale with all proceeds raised, to be donated to Ottawa’s Snowsuit Fund. Names will be displayed once the winners have been determined. Direct donations will also be collected at the door and accepted throughout the exhibition.

Please join us at the reception on Thursday, November 5th from 7-10 pm for snacks & refreshments, to meet the photographers and to hear us announce the first, second and third prize winners.

The exhibition will run from November 4 - November 29, 2009.

More About Naked In The Capital:
Naked In The Capital is photography contest based on the “Naked In Then House” series, produced by Toronto photographer and producer Dan Couto.
The photographers gathered at an undisclosed location where each was given 30 minutes to work with one nude model (whom they had never met) in an attempt to produce the best shoot. Each photographer was permitted one camera, either film or digital and one lens with no lights, reflectors or assistants.
Following the shoot, the photographers selected their three best images for printing and submission for exhibition at arts&architecture (1181 Bank Street, Ottawa). The selection of the winners will be made by the photographers themselves – each participant will vote for a first, second and third place image from amongst the exhibited work and may not vote for their own photographs.
